Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with visiting US President George W. Bush Sunday in Beijing. Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation through expanding mutual trust and common ground. CRI's Chen Simeng has the story.

  Reporter:

At the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, the leaders from China and the US expanded on common ground on such issues as China’s huge trade surplus to US, combat against bird flu and the North Korea’s nuclear issue.

Chinese President Hu Jintao says it is inevitable for the two nations to have different opinions upon various issues due to historical and cultural differences, but how to properly handle the differences through talks with mutual respect is the thing that matters.

He said both leaders have agreed to further promote the Sino-US economic and trade cooperation.

“We have agreed to expand cooperation based on the principles of equality and common development. We also have agreed to realize a trade balance gradually through joint efforts. When there are frictions and problems emerging in the rapid development of our economic and trade relations, we will tackle it properly through negotiations.”

His remarks were echoed by the US president George W. Bush.

  (2a/soundbites/1120 Bush)

"US and China share many common opportunities and challenges in the 21st century. we are important trading partners and we benefit from a system of free and fair trade."

China’s trade surplus is likely to increase to 200 billion US dollars this year.

It was just announced that China has signed a deal to buy 70 Boeing 737 airliners and will soon agree to purchase 80 more.

The Chinese president has also maintained that China will facilitate the currency reform for the sake of China and the world.

In addition, the Chinese leader also praised the US stance toward the one China principle, adding that China will safeguard the peace across the Taiwan Straits with the utmost sincerity and endeavor.

Energy is another issue that topped the agenda of their meeting. President Bush says the two parties have both realized the sharing of technology is a must to keep the strong economic development momentum, while energy diversification is also to be explored.

Meanwhile, the two countries have reached a consensus on fighting against the bird flu epidemic, making joint efforts in the prevention and control of the deadly virus.

It is the third official visit of President Bush since he took office in 2001. He invited Chinese President to visit the US early next year, which was accepted by Hu Jintao.
