The History of Badminton 羽毛球的历史

    羽毛球的历史，有很多种说法，一种说法是起源于日本，也有另一种说法是起源于印度。不过可以确定的是现代羽毛球运动诞生于英国，大约在1800年左右，由网球变化而来。如果留心你会发现现在的羽毛球场地和网球场地非常相似。1870年，出现了用羽毛、软木做的球和穿弦的球拍。从1873年起，羽毛球运动便逐渐开展起来，那时的活动场地是葫芦形，两头宽中间窄，窄处挂网，直至1901年才改作长方形。

    As to the beginning of badminton, there are a lot of stories. One saying that it started in Japan, the other says that it started from India. But one thing is for sure, which is that badminton was started in the U.K., in about 1800, which was developed from tennis. You may discover that there are a lot of similarities between the two. In the year of 1870, a sort of ball made of feather and wood as well as a bat woven with strings were invented. Ever since 1873, the sport of badminton become more and more prosperous, when the field was a gourd like, with two wider spaces at both ends and a narrow stretch of land in the middle where a net was set up. This gourd-like field was changed to a square shape in 1901.

    In 1893, the first badminton committee was established, which was then the British Badminton Association, holding a championship competition in 1899 nation wide.

    1934年，由加拿大、丹麦、英国、法国、爱尔兰、荷兰、新西兰、苏格兰和威尔士等国发起了国际羽毛球联合会，总部设在伦敦。从此，羽毛球国际比赛日渐增多。 　　

    In 1934, an international badminton association was founded with its headquarter in London. The members are Canada, Denmark, Britain, France, Ireland, Holland, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. Ever from then on, there have been more and more badminton competitions.

Sudirman Cup 苏迪曼杯羽毛球比赛

    Badminton powerhouse China launched their Sudirman Cup campaign Tuesday with a 5-0 sweep of Sweden to the delight of the home fans, while defending champions South Korea eased past Thailand with a 4-1 win.

    In other Group 1 matches on the opening day of the mixed team championship at Beijing's Capital Gymnasium, Denmark's shuttlers proved too powerful for England, snatching a 3-2 victory, while Indonesia beat Hong Kong 4-1.

    China, seeking to reclaim the title they lost in Eindhoven two years ago, got off to a flying start with Chen Qiqui and Zhao Tingting comfortably beating Fredrik Bergstrom and Johanna Persson 15-3, 15-12 in the mixed doubles.

Glossary of Badminton Terms 羽毛球词汇

Alley - Extension of the court by l 1/2 feet on both sides for doubles play.

    单打与双打界线间空地网球场边的平行狭长地带，加宽了界内场地，可进行双打比赛

Back Alley - Area between the back boundary line and the long service line for doubles.

    单打端线和双打端线之间的长地带

Backcourt - Back third of the court, in the area of the back boundary lines.

    距球门最远的场地

Balk - Any deceptive movement that disconcerts an opponent before or during the service; often called a "feint."

    非法假动作，不完全的或误导的动作

Baseline - Back boundary line at each end of the court, parallel to the net.

    （网球场的）底线

Carry - An illegal tactic, also called a sling or throw, in which the shuttle is caught and held on the racquet and then slung during the execution of a stroke.

Court - Area of play, as defined by the outer boundary lines.

Drive - A fast and low shot that makes a horizontal flight over the net.

Hairpin Net Shot - Shot made from below and very close to the net with the shuttle rising, just clearing the net, and then dropping sharply down the other side. The shuttle flight approximates the shape of a hairpin.

Kill - Fast, downward shot that cannot be returned

Net Shot - Shot hit from the forecourt that just clears the net and drops sharply.

Push Shot - Gentle shot played by pushing the shuttle with little wrist motion, usually from net or midcourt to the opponent.

Rally - Exchange of shots while the shuttle is in play.

    连续对打，在得一分前交换了几个回合，如在网球比赛中

Serve or Service - Stroke used to put shuttlecock into play at the start of each rally.

    发球，前边的是动词，后边的是名词。

Shuttlecock - Official name for the object that players hit.

Smash - Hard-hit overhead shot that forces the shuttle sharply downward.

    All About Sports  

    This show is not seriously about sports. The name threw me off at first too. It is actually about the people behind a sports show. A wonderful cast gives life to a hilariously clever script.

    Backstage is chaos at Sports Night, what with relationship issues, copyright infringements, arguments, typos, and writer's block. Casey (an anchor) is secretly in love with Dana (the producer) who secretly loves Casey. But, of course, this isn't too secret. Natalie (Dana's assistant) flits around clutching her clipboard, getting in everyone's way and fawning over the nerdy research analyst Jeremy, well, when she isn't busy hating his guts. The other anchor, Dan, is in therapy and hates soccer. Isaac (the big boss) is the father figure of the show, and likes to make remarks that show how totally in charge he is. Lesser characters (those technicians and the like) argue and toss in comments when spoken to.

    The genuine chemistry between the cast members and the fast-paced comedy and bits of drama combine to create a hyperactive show that will appeal to sports fans and non-sports fans alike.
