Life in a Tunnel
Virginia Skinner passes days and nights inside the tunnel of the Bethesda Metro station in Maryland.
Each day, hundreds of people pass by Virginia Skinner's "home" -- a series of shopping carts and cardboard boxes in the tunnel leading to the Bethesda Metro station in Bethesda, Md.
2、Virginia stares up at the colored lights that blink in the the tunnel. She says she doesn't want to be homeless because "you don't feel like you can get enough rest. It's not that spiritual."
3、Virginia likes to collect things, and stores her possessions in a series of shopping carts.
4、Virginia wakes up after an afternoon nap in the tunnel. "Virginia has been homeless for a long time," says her sister Dolores. "She was a young woman when she started living on the streets. She is a very intelligent young lady. She's been through a lot of hurt. She's been hurt a lot in life."
5、Family members have tried to convince Virginia to live with them, but she has declined. "I want her to be safe," Dolores says. "But we all have a choice in life. Nobody can make you do what you don't want to do."
6、Virginia moves her carts one at a time every night to the area just in front of the tunnel. She will move it all back to the inside of the tunnel come morning.
7、Virginia sweeps up the area where she stays and leaves it clean every night.
8、Virginia sits outside the tunnel, where she moved her belongings in 2006 after leaving a group home.
