HK Disneyland PK World Carnival

Let’s have a closer look at what the two have to offer.
CRI Exclusive by Chen Ying---The long-anticipated Hong Kong Disneyland, the 11th Disney-themed park in the world and the first in China, successfully opened to the public on Monday after six years of planning and construction. The local enthusiasm for Disneyland has been overwhelming. In a survey recently conducted in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, about three quarters of those surveyed had heard of its opening and about a third said they were considering a visit. But how many know of another theme park even closer to home? The World Carnival is taking place right now in Beijing, bringing its own set of amusement delights to crowds of happy visitors. Let’s have a closer look at what the two have to offer:

Character:
HK Disneyland: Themed amusement park.
World Carnival: Flexible touring carnival park
Reputation:
HK Disneyland: Disneyland is the world’s most famous themed amusement park and one of the most visited sites in the world.
World Carnival: The world’s largest touring amusement park.
Total Area:
HK Disneyland: 126 hectares in its first phase, with a second construction phase already underway (1 hectare is about 10, 000 square meters).
World Carnival: 60,000 square meters
Job opportunities:
HK Disneyland: Employs 5,000 workers, or "cast members".
World Carnival: Hires between 500-1,500 local staff of the host city.
Rides and Games:
HK Disneyland: The park will feature four differently themed lands similar to those of other Disney parks: Main Street, USA; Adventureland; Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. It will also feature a daily parade and nightly fireworks. There are currently 21 rides in operation.
World Carnival: Sporting competitions, stage performances, dances, local and exotic exhibitions, rides, challenge games, food and drink—all in the tradition of the carnival. There are about 50 rides and games in total.

Ticket Cost:
HK Disneyland: 290 HK dollars - 350 HK dollars (US $45)
World Carnival: 50 Yuan (US $6) for entry, which includes 10 tokens. Additional tokens can be purchased for games and rides.
Ticket Access:
HK Disneyland: Online booking or direct purchase at gate.
World Carnival: Online booking or direct purchase at gate. Much less chance of waiting in a long queue and ending up empty handed.
Experience:
HK Disneyland: People claim to fulfill long-time dreams of the Disney fairy tale. Most of the games and rides are relatively tame, geared towards a family experience.
World Carnival: People are drawn to the challenging and exciting games and rides. It is a fun way to find excitement and escape without even having to leave Beijing.
Capacity:
HK Disneyland: The park’s management expects to attract about five million visitors in its first 12 months of operations and up to 10 million a year after that, at a capacity of 30,000 visitors a day.
World Carnival: Officials expect a 2.5 million flow of visitors during the 52-day stay of the carnival in Beijing this year.
Revenue:
HK Disneyland: Hong Kong Disneyland estimates the park will generate HK$148.5 billion or US$19 billion in revenue over the next 40 years.
World Carnival: Shanghai’s 78-day World Carnival in 2003 attracted more than 2 million visitors, earning 240 million RMB (US$29 million).
Criticism:
HK Disneyland: Hour-long queues for rides, food shortages, inadequate parking, overcrowding, expensive meals, lack of rides and attractions.
World Carnival: potential environmental concern, casino games, and high costs. |
