获得2012年奥运会举办权的伦敦
2005-11-18 09:29:11 来源:未知 |
BRITAIN has won the race to host the 2012 Olympic Games. The stunning decision to stage the Games in London was announced by International Olympic Committee members in Singapore. The victory triggered scenes of jubilation in Trafalgar Square, where thousands had gathered to await the decision. In contrast, there was misery in Paris where a French triumph had been anticipated. Since entering the race in 2003 Paris had been the firm favourite. Moscow was the first city to be eliminated from the voting, followed by New York and Madrid. But in recent weeks London’s chances had been improving rapidly. Last month an IOC evaluation team praised the level of progress that had been made in the capital. The other candidates - New York, Madrid and Moscow - were always considered outsiders. Ecstatic London’s win is a double-blow to Parisian aspirations of hosting the Games anytime soon. It is unlikely consecutive Olympics would be awarded to European cities. And it is the third time in a row that Paris has failed. London’s win comes at its first attempt in recent years. The city has staged the Games on two previous occasions - 1908 and 1948. Manchester bid unsuccessfully for the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, which went to Atlanta and Sydney respectively. While bid leader Lord Coe and his team were understandably ecstatic, for Tony Blair it was an even sweeter victory. Mr Blair has been a passionate backer of the bid. In Singapore he personally lobbied the 30 or so IOC members who were thought to still be uncommitted to one proposal or another. Preparing the London bid cost nearly £30m. Completing the facilities and staging the Games will require nearly £2-3bn. The Prime Minister had to bite his tongue after French president Jacques Chirac made a series of tasteless jokes about British cooking earlier this week. But now Mr Chirac - who will be with the Prime Minister at Gleneagles for the G8 summit - will get a taste of humble pie.
